About Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI)

The HMI is an enclosed assembly that houses a human-machine interface terminal and the components an operator uses to run a machine. The HMI displays real-time data from the PLC and field devices, letting an operator start, stop, configure and monitor the process from one screen.

HMI terminal hardware inside the panel includes:

  • A touchscreen or keypad HMI terminal, the operator’s window into the control system, mounted in the enclosure door for line-of-sight operation.
  • A programmable logic controller (PLC), the controller the HMI reads from and writes to.
  • Push-buttons, pilot lights and selector switches, the hard-wired controls UL 508A keeps as safety-critical functions.
  • Power supply and terminal blocks, which condition and distribute control voltage to the HMI and field wiring.

If the screen fails mid-shift, then hard-wired pushbuttons let operators stop the machine. An HMI holds the operator interface, while the PLC is the controller that runs the machine’s logic. The HMI displays data and accepts operator input; the PLC executes the programmed instructions that drive the equipment from which data is measured.

The HMI reads from and writes to the PLC over the control network. PLC integration determines how the HMI behaves according to a series of steps:

  1. HMI tags map directly to PLC memory addresses, so a button press on the screen sets a bit the PLC acts on.
  2. The PLC runs the deterministic control logic, scanning inputs and setting outputs in milliseconds, while the HMI handles visualization.
  3. Communication uses an industrial protocol such as EtherNet/IP or Modbus TCP, the messaging standards that carry data in a live feed.
  4. If the HMI loses communication with the PLC, then the controller keeps running the process while the screen shows a comms-fault alarm.
  5. Separation of roles means an HMI swap does not require rewriting PLC logic, which protects your validated control program.

An HMI is the machine-level interface an operator uses on the line, while SCADA supervises devices across an entire facility. As a plant-wide monitoring system, it adds centralized reporting, a data historian search tool and facility-wide alarm management. A SCADA system can integrate many HMIs beneath it.

Supervisory control extends beyond a single HMI:

  • HMI scope covers one machine or a single line, giving the operator local visualization and control at the point of work.
  • SCADA scope covers the whole facility, pulling data from many HMIs, PLCs and remote sites into one supervisory layer.
  • Data historian, a time-stamped database tool inside SCADA, stores months of process data for trend analysis and compliance reporting.
  • Alarm management at the SCADA top-down level aggregates faults across sites, so a control room sees live plant-wide events in an emergency.

If a line-level HMI goes offline, then SCADA still logs and alarms on the underlying PLC data it collects directly. An HMI controls one machine or line, while SCADA supervises many machines and lines across the plant. It also pulls data from the PLCs beneath. The scope includes a screen layout plus operator navigation, mapping HMI tags to PLC addresses, configuring alarms and trends and factory-testing the panel before shipment. Yes, in two areas. Adgo builds HMIs as a UL 508A- and UL 698A-certified panel. UL 508A is the standard for constructing general-use industrial control panels, and the label applies to a given panel when the specification calls for a third-party listing mark. UL 508A panel certification governs how the panel is built:

  • General-use panels rated 1000 volts or less in ordinary locations are governed by UL508A. Also, the HMI, PLC, breakers and terminal blocks carry their own recognized ratings before assembly.
  • Short-circuit current rating (SCCR) is calculated and marked on the panel, which UL 508A and NEC Article 409 both require pre-install.
  • Operator-interface devices such as pushbuttons, pilot lights and selector switches are wired to construction rules alongside the HMI.

If an inspector requires a third-party mark, then a panel built to UL 508A carries the listing label that satisfies the AHJ (authority having jurisdiction). An HMI can be built into any NEMA 12, NEMA 4 or NEMA 4X enclosures, depending on the operating environment. NEMA 12 suits indoor dust and drip areas, while NEMA 4 and 4X add hose-down and corrosion resistance. The panel’s overall type rating accounts for the HMI cutout and any device mounted through the door.

NEMA enclosure ratings match the panel to its environment:

  • NEMA 12, an indoor rating, protects the HMI against falling dust, dirt and dripping non-corrosive liquids on a plant floor.
  • NEMA 4, a watertight rating, withstands hose-directed water and washdown, common on food and beverage lines.
  • NEMA 4X adds corrosion resistance, using stainless steel or polycarbonate for chemical, marine or sanitary areas.

HMI bezel gasketing maintains the enclosure rating at the screen cutout, the most common point where a rating is lost. If the panel mounts in a washdown zone, then a NEMA 4X enclosure with a sealed HMI bezel keeps the rating intact during cleaning.

An HMI can be built into NEMA 12, 4 or 4X enclosures, depending on dust, washdown and corrosion exposure risk in the planned environment.   1. Electrical schematics show every circuit, terminal and wire number, so a technician traces a fault without reverse-engineering the build.
  2. Mechanical drawings give enclosure layout and dimensions, the reference for mounting, spares fit and future modifications.
  3. Bill of materials (BOM) lists each component with manufacturer part numbers, so replacements are sourced exactly, not guessed.
  4. Factory test records document the panel’s pre-shipment checks, evidence the assembly was verified before it reached your floor.
  5. HMI application backup, the editable project file, lets you or Adgo modify screens later instead of rebuilding the program.

Engineers evaluate the existing interface, migrate the application to a supported platform and re-integrate the HMI with the PLCs and SCADA already running the process.

  • Application migration ports screens, tags and alarms from the obsolete or out-of-sync terminal to a supported platform, preserving operator workflow.
